BMW has a new headlamp design on the horizon to brighten your spirits. That's right,  BMW is working dilligently on the next evolution of headlamp technology... using lasers.

As futuristic as this sounds, it does make a lot of sense. If we were to compare the intensity of LEDs to BMW's new laser headlamps, the LEDs would be just another raindrop in the monsoon.

While LED headlights are extremely effective at piercing through the black of night while being energy efficient, those features pale in comparison to the gains offered by BMW and their new laser-cut design. The new headlamps by BMW are, in fact, 1,000 times stronger than conventional LED headlamps . And, they consume around half the energy!

How will the lights look to oncoming traffic? Made benign via a conversion filter, light from the laser headlamps will be bright and white in color.

At this time, BMW has not given an ETA for when they'll bring their new laser-cut headlamp technology to market. They are, however, planning to offer their first sneak peak of the technology in the new BMW i8 concept slated to debut this week, at the Frankfurt Motor Show.
